Meet the DIAS Team

Whether employed through DIAS or through respective partner’s; together we share an unwavering passion for our Australian Defence Industry and the critically important capability that our industry develops. Capability that keeps, Australia, our allies and most importantly our service men and women safe.

The following is a small subset of team capabilities drawn from within the DIAS network.

Andrew Garth

Managing Director - DI Advisory Services

Andrew is the founder and principal of DI Advisory Services. Andrew is a highly regarded leader throughout the Defence industry well known for his passion for Australian Defence Industry and in-turn the Defence capability outcomes that our industry incubates, grows and delivers.

Andrew’s career includes senior leadership roles within Defence SMEs, Defence Primes and Commonwealth Government.

Prior to establishing DI Advisory Services, Andrew was the former General Manager of the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) and its predecessor the Defence Industry Innovation Centre (DIIC). During this time Andrew has been extensively involved in developing Australia’s Defence Industry policy environment including the Defence Industry Policy Statement 2016, the Defence Export Strategy and the Defence Industrial Capability Plan.

Through these roles Andrew has developed a sophisticated and in-depth understanding of the areas where Defence SMEs require support and how-to best provision that support to achieve outcomes; for both SMEs and Defence alike.

Mark Arthur

Senior Consultant

Mark has spent over twenty-five years working in the Defence sector in senior leadership roles with medium and large multi-national companies both locally and in the US.

As Managing Director at Ferra, Mark successfully drove the diversification into new market sectors by capturing complex multi-million-dollar international contracts.

In his role at Airbus, he led a step change in performance, transforming the production line into what was widely recognized within Airbus Helicopters as the exemplar Military Helicopter Production line within the worldwide group. This included production and retrofit programs for both the MRH90 and ARH Tiger Helicopters.

As a Senior Consultant, Mark has extensive experience in senior leadership, program management, international business, quality, business improvement and finance.

John Dwyer

Senior Consultant

As a consultant John recently completed a successful four-year assignment with Thomas Global Systems as Director, Business Development covering the defence air, land & sea domains.

Prior to that John had a 25-year corporate career with UTC Aerospace Systems where he was responsible for MRO military sales across the Asia Pacific region together with the Joint Strike Fighter manufacturing program in Australia.

John is a Six Sigma Black Belt, holds a Master of Commerce in International Relations and is an alumni of the Defence & Industry Study Course (DISC).

Sam McNaughton

General Manager/Senior Consultant

Sam has spent over fifteen years working in the Australian Defence industry, including 10 years working with the Department of Defence and Department of Industry’s flagship industry development initiative the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC).

As a Senior Consultant, Sam brings extensive experience working with small to medium businesses to assist them to become more capable, reliable and competitive suppliers to the defence sector.

Sam was formerly the Director Operations and Compliance with Moog Australia and has extensive experience in export control compliance, Lean Enterprise methods and implementation, quality management systems, operations management, leadership development and coaching, business analysis, change management, project management and strategy development and implementation.

Tiffany Watkins

Senior Consultant

Tiffany is a procurement and business advisory professional, with more than 20 years experience in operating within Defence Procurement and within Defence Industry. This experience has included leading and supporting complex Defence procurement material and non-materiel programs through the development of acquisition strategies, tendering, evaluations, contract negotiations and contract governance, as well as implementation of Defence and Industry programs to enhance Australian Industry Capability and social procurement objectives, such as increasing the participation of indigenous and/or regional businesses. Her international experience also extends to providing negotiation and contract management training to foreign government officials.

In addition, Tiffany has experience in working with Defence Industry through her previous advisory role within the Centre for Defence Industry Capability and a number of separate consulting projects..

Tiffany’s professional experience is complemented by an Executive Masters in Business, with a specialisation in Strategic Procurement, supported by a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Economics and Psychology.  Tiffany also participated in the Defence Industry Study Course in 2019. Furthermore, Tiffany is a certified Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply.

These capabilities, reflecting both Defence and Industry perspectives, enable Tiffany to provide valuable advice and support to businesses wanting to engage and grow within the Defence sector, across both Materiel and Non-Materiel domains.

Les Zanati

Senior Consultant

Les is an accomplished business leader with more than 30 years of experience in the manufacturing sector, servicing industrial, automotive and defence markets. With extensive experience in operational roles, Les is also passionate about business development and building relationships to provide shared benefit to all stakeholders.

Les’ enthusiasm for the defence industry developed while holding senior leadership positions within industry allowing him to take advantage of the industry’s strong collaborative nature and sound support from Governments to help build sovereign capability. 

His international experience extends to business development in North America where he was posted for two years. He was also responsible for establishing a new manufacturing facility in SE Asia.

As CEO of Mackay Consolidated Industries, Les was afforded opportunities to engage at a higher level within the defence industry and it is through these experiences that he is motivated to assist other SMEs undertaking a similar journey.

A graduate of the Defence Industry Study Course in 2011, Les is well acquainted with the vital relationships between industry and government and the ongoing importance of networking.

Les holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) and an MBA, majoring in Strategic Management.
